Business Insider then turned to Payscale and Glassdoor to find the average hourly pay for each position. Most of the jobs on the list do not require any formal or specific education or degrees.

This side job is an ideal fit for detail-oriented, organized people looking to make a little extra money.


Job duties: Marketing consultants manage digital marketing, email campaigns, and web layouts to support the sales process for companies and businesses. They often work independently or on behalf of a consulting agency, meaning they are not actually employed by the companies they consult for. Marketing consultants also track sales and feedback to determine the success of their marketing strategies. For creative individuals with a background in marketing or sales, this flexible side job may be a perfect match.


If you're looking to learn a new skill, starting your own online business is a solid side hustle to try out. You can learn things like managing inventory, pricing products, dealing with customer service, and marketing.


Some people adopted side hustles during lockdowns as a way to keep busy, while many sought second jobs for the additional income, said Luke Pardue, an economist at the small business payroll and benefits platform Gusto.


In fact, entrepreneurs were especially interested in starting side gigs, as 33% of the small-business owners who use Gusto said they needed side hustles to keep their companies afloat, Pardue said. And that number increases when looking at entrepreneurs of color: Fifty-three percent of Black business owners and 49% of Asian American and Pacific Islander founders took on side hustles to support their main businesses, Pardue added.

Insider was interested in looking at jobs that pay well and that also may see more jobs added over the decade. To come up with our set of jobs that are projected to have bright futures ahead of them, we took the geometric mean of median annual wages and projected employment growth from 2021 to 2031 for each occupation. We then ranked occupations based on their geometric mean. A higher geometric mean would mean a higher rank.

In an interview with Insider, she said she was able to keep her personal expenses low by living at home or with a roommate. She based her living choices on her side hustle, and she turned it into a full-time business in five years. The entrepreneur recommended self-reflection on the level of commitment and time it takes to build something from scratch.


The couple cofounded Relationship Development, a relationship-coaching side hustle that they turned into a $2 million business in 2010. They spent two years forming a business plan before officially launching the company. One thing that helped the couple grow the business significantly was online marketing.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jasmine Katatikarn, a tech-artist manager for Amazon who also runs an e-learning business, the Academy of Animated Art, as a side hustle in New York City. The following has been edited for length and clarity.


I work 40 hours a week at Amazon as a tech-artist manager, a role I've had since January, and on the side, I run a business. My side hustle, the Academy of Animated Art, helps people acquire the skills they need to become 3D lighting artists and get jobs in the animation industry. 3D lighting is the process of lighting in animated movies, games, visual effects, commercials, and so on. For example, if you have a scene with a haunted house, lighting helps create that spooky ambiance by adding shadows and dim lighting.

I took my business to the next level when I was able to re-invest my side business income into a team that has helped me grow further.
